I’ve been in this industry long enough to have watched a few bubbles inflate and a few crashes unfold. As Director of Investments at BEW, I manage the investment research process, including asset allocation and manager selection. I monitor and evaluate new research and strategies within the investment industry, which I find fascinating, and incorporate them (as appropriate) into what we do for clients.

A key part of my role is also helping advisors deeply understand and confidently communicate the portfolios and managers in which their clients are invested. Aside from the intellectual stimulation, it’s very rewarding to combine investment theory with real-world considerations to create something that helps clients.

There’s an adage, variously attributed to Yogi Berra and Albert Einstein: “In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice; but in practice, there is.” I keep that in mind while building portfolios. Complexity isn’t sophistication — the optimal portfolio is one clients can understand and, importantly, stick with through both good markets and bad ones.

Outside of work, I spend as much time as possible with my family while my kids still think hanging out with their parents is a reasonable way to spend a weekend. We love exploring everything the Bay Area has to offer. I’m also, perhaps unwisely, very emotionally invested in the Golden State Warriors. And I enjoy listening to investing, history, and pop-culture podcasts on my commute.
